ESOL Endorsement FlyerThe ESOL Endorsement at Metro RESA is a GaPSC approved preparation program that provides approved candidates with the coursework and related field experience required to add the ESOL Endorsement to a current standard Georgia Professional Certificate. The Metro RESA ESOL Endorsement prepares P-12 educators to demonstrate competency in addressing the instructional, language, and cultural needs of students whose first language is not English in Georgia Public Schools.

Learning Outcomes
The ESOL endorsement courses will prepare educators to effectively meet the unique cultural, linguistic, and instructional needs of English Learners.
Candidates will:
- develop understanding of English language structures in different discourse contexts
- provide knowledge of second language acquisition theory and the developmental process of language
- demonstrate knowledge of language processes
- apply knowledge of English academic language functions, learning domains, content-specific language
- explore discourse structures, and vocabulary to promote ELLs’ academic achievement across content areas

Admission Requirements
- Candidates must hold a valid T-4 or higher, Clear Renewable Certificate in any teaching, service, or leadership field.

Tuition Costs
- Metro RESA Model:
- The individual course cost is $350.
- The total cost for all three required courses is $1050.
- Required text fees $60-$130, depending on whether the candidate chooses to rent or purchase the text.
- Participants will not be allowed to begin a course until payment is received by Metro RESA.
- All fees are non-refundable.

Course I: Cultural Issues in TESOL (5o hours/5 PLUs)
This 50 hour/5 PLU course explores the nature of culture and the role of cultural factors in the teaching and learning of English as an additional language in U.S. schools. This course is one of three courses that constitute the Georgia state add-on endorsement for TESOL in public schools.
Objectives:
- to explore the nature of culture and gain an understanding of how one’s own and others’ assumptions, attitudes and behaviors are shaped by culture
- to gain insight into the connections among language, culture, and education
- to gain first-hand experience with crossing cultural boundaries
- to become conversant with classroom materials and techniques dealing with culture and cultural diversity

Course II: Applied Linguistics in TESOL (50 hours/5 PLUs)
This 50 hour/5 PLU course explores theories of language acquisition, with a focus on the nature and development of first and second language, the elements of linguistics, language varieties, and the influences on the acquisition of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills of English as an additional language across age levels. This course is one of three courses that constitute the Georgia state add-on endorsement for TESOL in public schools.
Objectives:
- to gain knowledge of the nature and structure of language, including general principles and terminology of linguistics
- to learn to recognize and dispel language myths
- to develop understanding of language varieties
- to increase appreciation for the challenges that English language learners experience on all levels
- to gain knowledge of the processes of and relationships between language acquisition and language instruction and assessments in listening, speaking, reading, and writing

Course III: Methods and Materials in TESOL (50 hours/5 PLUs)
This 50 hour/5 PLU course is intended to provide you with an understanding of theory, methods, and materials for teaching and assessing learners of English as an additional language in U.S. schools. This course is one of three courses that constitute the Georgia state add-on endorsement for TESOL in public schools.
Objectives:
- to understand the relationship between SLA theory and teaching methodology
- to gain proficiency in designing and using language teaching methods and materials
- to gain hands-on experience teaching ESOL
- to develop as a reflective practitioner in education

Courses are designed to be taken in sequence, beginning with Cultural Issues in TESOL and ending with the Methods and Materials in TESOL. The ESOL Endorsement is divided into three courses consisting of 5 PLUs each. Successful completion of all three courses is required to add the ESOL Endorsement to a base certificate.
Meet the Coordinator

Dr. Rita Gimenez, Metro RESA ESOL Endorsement Coordinator
Dr. Gimenez is the current Metro RESA ESOL Endorsement Coordinator. She has fifteen years of experience teaching K-12 ESOL, one year of experience teaching high school Spanish, and two years of experience teaching high school English in Douglas County. She also has ten years of experience teaching ESOL Endorsement and Inclusive Education courses at the university level. Dr. Gimenez earned an A.A. degree in English from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, a B.A. in English from Georgia Southern University, a M.A. in Professional Writing from Kennesaw State University, and an Ed.S. and Ed.D. in Teacher Leadership with an emphasis in Inclusive Education from Kennesaw State University. Dr. Gimenez is committed to fostering the best possible learning environments, relationships, and instruction to support Multilingual Learners and their teachers.
